Christian
Paul and his Dad Scot raced Junior Dragsters together while
Christian was growing up. Christian was a winner in the
SCEDA Junior Dragster series as well as at other events.
Prior to graduation from High School Christian met with
recruiters from all the branches of the Armed Services to
see what career opportunities they could offer. He decided
on the Navy, negotiated a very good enlistment contract and
signed up for a 5 year commitment under the Navy's delayed
entry program. Christian
signed up to be a Submariner and will be getting computer
and fire fighting training.
Just before Thanksgiving, Christian left for Basic Training
at the Naval Training Command, Great Lakes Illinois. Eight
and a half weeks and lots of hard work later he graduated on
January 23rd. Upon graduation Christian said this was by
far the hardest thing he ever went through but felt like
"King of the World" having completed his training.
Christian has had to forgo drag racing for the near future,
but is off on a great adventure and will receive valuable
training at the same time.
Drag Racing has a long heritage of ties to the Navy as “Big
Daddy” Don Garlits is an Honorary Navy Recruiter and has
been involved with the Navy since 1971 when he toured US
military installations in Vietnam. Like “Fast” Jack
Beckman, who served in the Air Force, maybe he is onto
something as far as a racing career goes.
Christian will be in Connecticut for the next 18 months for
training before he goes out as crew on a submarine.
